چکیده

This paper presents results that demonstrate the auroral modeling capabilities of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) SAMM2 (SHARC And MODTRAN Merged 2) radiance code. A scene generation capability is obtained by coupling SAMM2 with a recently developed Clutter Region Atmosphere and Scene Module (CRASMO), which provides an approach for rapid generation of time sequences and images of radiance clutter. Modeled results will be compared to data collected by the Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX) in the IR and UV-visible spectral regions during an auroral event on November 10, 1996. The paper is organized as follows. We first present a brief history of the AFRL SHARC/SAMM codes, leading up to the current version, SAMM2 v.2. The SAMM2 UV-visible auroral kinetic model will then be described, followed by a comparison of modeled results to the MSX data.

Modeling Top of Atmosphere Radiance over Heterogeneous Non-Lambertian Rugged Terrain

Topography affects the fraction of direct and diffuse radiation received on a pixel and changes the sun–target–sensor geometry, resulting in variations in the observed radiance. Retrieval of surface–atmosphere properties from top of atmosphere radiance may need to account for topographic effects. This study investigates how such effects can be taken into account for top of atmosphere radiance m...

Numerical modeling of the magnetic topology near Mars auroral observations

[1] Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the Mars magnetic field topology are presented for the auroral observations reported from the Mars Express SPICAM instrument. It is found that the field lines closest to the assumed emission location are open. That is, they are connected to the interplanetary magnetic field, thus allowing access for solar wind electrons to bombard the upper atmospher...

First E region observations of mesoscale neutral wind interaction with auroral arcs

[1] We report the first observations of E region neutral wind fields and their interaction with auroral arcs at mesoscale spatial resolution during geomagnetically quiet conditions at Mawson, Antarctica. This was achieved by using a scanning Doppler imager, which can observe thermospheric neutral line‐of‐sight winds and temperatures simultaneously over a wide field of view. In two cases, the ba...

Normal Mapping for Precomputed Radiance Transfer (NMPRT)

Normal mapping is a variant of bump mapping that is commonly used in computer games. It models complex surface variations by explicitly storing a surface normal in a texture map. However, it has not been used with precomputed radiance transfer (PRT), a technique for modeling an object’s response to a parameterized model of lighting, which enables interactive rendering of complex global illumina...

Accurate modeling of spectral fine-structure in Earth radiance spectra measured with the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment.

We present what we believe to be a novel approach to simulating the spectral fine structure (<1 nm) in measurements of spectrometers such as the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME). GOME measures the Earth's radiance spectra and daily solar irradiance spectra from which a reflectivity spectrum is commonly extracted. The high-frequency structures contained in such a spectrum are, apart fro...
